Menatelecom: Complicated “Unlimited” menaHome Packages

A couple of days ago, I received an SMS on my phone from Menatelecom announcing their new menaHome (the residential tier of services) packages. According to the message, packages above 2Mbps are now unlimited (BD13 and above packages). I decided to take a look at their website (revamped lately). First thing I noticed is that they have definitely added more information (international rates, local rates, throttle speed etc…).

Now the bad thing is that it seems like they are offering more speed but the same data transfer for several packages (2 to 6Mbps).…

Menatelecom MyFi Hidden Pages

If you are a Menatelecom customer and have one of the regular MyFi pocket WiMAX devices (the Seowon Intech SWU-8000), you probably think it is featureless given it lacks many settings other routers have. Actually, the Menatelecom branding theme is what is hiding most of the extras! They have left the bare necessities to get any user up and running. The most complicated thing they have left are the port forwarding settings.…

Let The 4G Battle Begin!

Only days after Batelco announce a successful trial of their 4G LTE network, Viva comes out with a bang announcing that they will be showing their LTE stuff on the 1st of January, 2012. The difference?

Batelco were secretive about it, testing it in their Hamala HQ. Viva are making it public, at the City Centre mall, where users can experience it.

Batelco announces it as a trial. Viva as a full blown launch.…

Menatelecom MyFi Router Security Risk

Today I decided to try out one of those sites that checks what ports you have open on your connection (GRC). At the time I performed the test I was on my Menatelecom MyFi connection (reviewed here). Unfortunately their device have two risky ports open. One of them I guess they left as a backdoor for their support team to access and fix (or break) stuff. The other I have no idea why they decided to leave open.…

Menatelecom Website Revamp

It has been a few days since Menatelecom have revamped their website to look more like the changing times. It appears like they have opted to go for a more white theme, which is refreshing given that their red was a bit dark and in some way would look like Batelco's site if it weren't for the information being not about Batelco.

Just about everything you need is now available right on the home page: home and business packages, new products and services, support, downloads and a speed test facility.…

Review: Menatelecom MyFi Internet Service

Last but not least (for a while I hope :-P), comes the review of the current Internet service I am using: Menatelecom's MyFi service. Thanks to the device, it is a great way to get online with multiple devices simultaneously, and workaround platform limitations (such as dongles not working with Linux for example) given you have WiFi. The technology is commonly known as MiFi. Powered by WiMAX.

Let me start by saying that Menatelecom is not the first provider in Bahrain to offer such a device to customers, in fact I believe Zain was the first, offering it for quite a while (can't seem to find on their site.…

Review: BurstNET VPS Hosting

I thought I would leave a review about my previous host (BurstNET) which hosted this website reliably for just under a year (from last December till the mid of this month, November). BurstNET provide a wide variety of services, however their most popular services are dedicated servers and virtual private servers (VPS). They are a well known, budget provider in the hosting market, running since the 90s. Many are put off by their website design, but don't judge a book by its cover!…
