Is Zain Bahrain Leeching Their Customers?

Right now there is a battle of the telcos going on in Bahrain ever since Viva launched their services. Batelco and Zain (formerly MTC Vodafone) are coming up with offers from mobile services to broadband to retain or even gain some more customers in the process.

One of the most important factors people end up going from one to another, or signing up for a new service is price. At the moment they are all very competitive, some even have complicated packages (first minute rate X, second rate Y, between time A and B rate Z). At the end of the day, if you understand clearly how much you will get charged there should be no problem.

I currently have 2 mobile lines active, my old Zain number and recently a Viva number. The Zain is still active since some stuff are still registered using that number as a contact. I do get better signal with my Viva in my area, Zain towers for some reason doesn’t like my home.

Anyway, back to the topic. When I registered to Zain I knew my package was the “normal” eeZee, which charges BHD0.043/minute (43 Fils per minute), no matter how much I talk. This was back when I got my line (2005?). Now with all this competition I thought Zain would decide to lower their rates. So I visit the Zain “eeZee Price Plans” page, and it looks cheaper (screenshots in case they find out their mistake and decide to edit):

Zain 7ada eeZee:

7adaeezee Is Zain Bahrain Leeching Their Customers?

Zain eeZee (for extended usage):

eezeeextended Is Zain Bahrain Leeching Their Customers?

Zain eeZee (for occasional usage):

eezeestandard Is Zain Bahrain Leeching Their Customers?

Zain eeZee International:

eezeeinternational Is Zain Bahrain Leeching Their Customers?

As you can see rates for “Other Networks” are either BHD0.040/minute (40 Fils per minute) or BHD0.045/minute (45 Fils per minute). No where in that page do I see 43 Fils/minute. I figured I am probably in the eeZee occasional usage group, which should charge me 40 Fils/minute to whatever network. I decided it was time to call their customer service center. The call transcript was something like this:

Me: “Hello, I would like to know the rate for the regular eeZee please”.

Zain: “We have many eeZee packages, which one?”.

Me: “The package for this line I am calling from”.

Zain: “Hold on please, let me check”.

(IT TOOK THEM AROUND 3 MINUTES (OR MORE) TO CHECK MY PACKAGE DETAILS!!!!!)

Zain: “Your package is 43 Fils/minute, 32 Fils/minute on Fridays”.

Me: “I saw on the website there is a package for 40 Fils/minute”.

Zain: “But your package is 43 Fils/minute, 32 Fils/minute on Fridays”.

Me: “Do you have any package that charges 40 Fils/minute?”.

Zain: “We have many eeZee packages, which one are you talking about?”.

(That’s like saying “we sell many plastic cups, which one do you want?” to someone who has no idea on the brand…)

Me: “I don’t know which one, I found one that charges 40 Fils/minute on your website”.

Zain: “But your package is 43 Fils/minute, 32 Fils/minute on Fridays”.

At this point I decided to end the call by adding and replacing a few words in the above sentence, followed by the “thank you, good bye”.

Me: “So my package is 43 Fils/minute… 32 Fridays… Thank you”.

Of course the call actually ended with the mandatory “Can I help you with anything else?”.

Back to the topic of this post now: “Is Zain Bahrain leeching their customers?”. To be more precise, old customers that have registered many years ago (since I am being charged the old rates).

I don’t want to repeat the same conversation above at one of their outlets without some crackers for their parrots…

Review: Tom Clancy’s H.A.W.X 2

I have decided, for once, to get a game locally for my PS3 (I usually buy from Amazon or eBay, due to the rip off around here). It has been just a while since H.A.W.X 2 was released and they had it around here already.

HAWX 2 Review: Tom Clancys H.A.W.X 2

Since it was pretty new, there weren't any reviews around online from sites such as IGN or Gamespot etc… But I felt certain that since this was the second title in H.A.W.X it should be good and better than the first. To summarize, I am disappointed, the original H.A.W.X was much better. It almost felt as if they were in a rush or something to put a game together.

The game starts with something new, you need to take off and land, this was probably the only thing I found interesting in the whole game. You go through the same steps as the first game, a storyline mission, then training then the rest of the missions. You still have the XP system, as you complete challenges and kill you get points which help you level to get planes and open up a choice of weapons to use.

Missions are much harder and complex this time, I had to repeat a checkpoint several times due to the overwhelming number of enemies at some point (my bad I guess, I wasn't managing my ammo properly).

Dogfights suck now. Don't even think about shooting at planes from a distance: as soon as you get a radar lock, they shoot flares, as soon as you launch your first missile, they shoot flares (I am trigger happy, I shoot 2 missiles at a time, so I kept losing 2 missiles for a while), as soon as you get close, they shoot flares. Your plane carries between 12 to 20 flares depending on the mission. Your enemy carries an unlimited supply of flares, the realism was way way way off. Also if you try to fly your plane through an area with a lot of activity (explosions, enemies, missiles, debris etc…) you WILL notice the FPS drop (it lead to me crashing my plane at some point).

The game seems to finish quick as well, and lacks the appeal to play it again. I tried to play the missions again but I was just forcing myself and I shut it off, disappointed. I tried to "customize" a mission but I only had 2 planes to choose from… By the time you completed the original H.A.W.X for the first time, you had a nice selection of planes.

I can't believe I paid release date price for a game that seems lacking…

Hotfile Down :-(

It seems like one of the best file hosts, Hotfile is currently down icon sad Hotfile Down : ( . I noticed my downloads on jDownloader stop and thought it is probably a bug in jDownloader or my ISP acting up. Apparently they weren’t to blame, Hotfile is really down…

I hope they were not taken down or having financial problems (they are one of the most popular and have one of the cheapest premium accounts).

My guess its probably some DDOS attack, admin error or some of those hamsters powering the servers died. Can’t wait to start downloading again!!

Edit: They are back, let the downloads being!

Menatelecom Unlocks

I’m not sure when this has exactly happened, but I found this out a few weeks ago. I decided for some random reason to visit Menatelecom‘s Motorola web interface (aka the WiMax modem, default IP 192.168.15.1). I tried the default password: “motorola” and nothing, my hopes were dashed. I tried the next obvious password: “menatelecom” and bang the status page opens up!!

Yep, it seems like Menatelecom have finally unlocked their devices! Now you can personally configure port forwarding, change the IP address of the device (when I called customer service they told me its impossible…) and most importantly add your router in DMZ and minimize a bit of NAT.

The interface is Menatelecom branded (logo at top right) and partially locked, which is good, mostly, since you don’t want deleting the certificates and authentication required to connect to the network.

Here is a partially censored screenshot of what it’s like inside:

On another note, it seems like they have added STC (Saudi Telecom Company) as an additional route according to this. It was pretty good when it was active due to STC’s peers (Level 3, TIM, Tinet, Sprint, Global Crossing amongst many others). I had some problems on some sites and services and a few days later they were back on using Tata for all traffic I can see. Not sure if they got many complaints, or it was only on a testing basis.
